Our indoor air can contain a number of potentially harmful particles and pollutants. This can be particularly troublesome for allergy sufferers and those with asthma. But, even if you have no underlying health issues, you may find yourself struggling with headaches, sore throats, dry sinuses and even low mood due to your indoor air.

According to the EPA, there is a direct link between our health and our indoor air quality. Long term exposure to poor indoor air quality can have a significant impact on your quality of life. So, while you may be concerned about pollutants out on the street, remember that you are likely to spend far more time inside your home and you may want to take action to improve your indoor air quality.

The Hathaspace HSP001 is an innovative air purifier that can destroy 99.97% of all air pollutants with a six stage filtration system. So, it can eliminate pet dander, odors, pollen, smoke, dust mites, mold and other allergens. It can also eliminate viruses and bacteria.

Review

With so many air purifier models on the market, it can feel a little overwhelming to try and find the best unit for your home. So, here we’ll look at some of the key Hathaspace HSP001 features in more detail to help you to make an informed purchase decision.

Overall performance

Hathaspace HSP001 Review: Is This a High-Quality Budget Product?
Hathaspace HSP001 has a very simple yet eye-catching design

The Hathaspace HSP001 is a smart air purifier that can destroy 99.97% of air pollutants down to 0.3 microns. The device has automatic sensors and a six-stage filtration system, which can eliminate many common indoor pollutants and allergens, so your home smells fresh and is clean.

Hathaspace appreciates that the air inside our homes is becoming increasingly impacted by potentially harmful compounds, chemicals and materials. In some cases, your indoor air may be more harmful than the air outside.

The HSP001 has a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) of 160+, so you can perfectly filter spaces of 300 square feet. This ensures that you and your family are protected from breathing in potentially dangerous materials to help you enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

Filtration technology

Multi stage filtration is not a new concept for air purifiers, but budget devices often feature a very basic multi stage filtration system. However, the Hathaspace HSP001 is a genuine air purifier with numerous “actual” physical filters.

When you switch on the HSP001, you’ll notice a flow of air around the device that is similar to most air purifier models. However, the HSP001 features a prefilter that can immediately remove some chemicals. There are then other filter layers that add up to a removal efficiency of 99.97%.

The air filtration system is supported with an ionizer that boosts the overall efficiency, which should alleviate breathing issues and avoid triggering asthma.

Filter types

As we touched on above, the Hathaspace HSP001 has a number of physical filter layers that contribute to the six-stage filtration system. These include:

Pre-filter: This is the first stage in the HSP001 filtration system. It is a Nano Cold Catalyst filter that can remove larger particles such as pet hair or dust. It can also eliminate common household chemicals such as ammonia, formaldehyde and other potentially harmful gases.

Activated Carbon: The next filter has an activated carbon media that can absorb odors, smoke and gases. It can also absorb VOCs ( Volatile Organic Compounds Trusted Source Volatile Organic Compounds Impact on Indoor Air Quality | US EPA Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. www.epa.gov ) that are found in household products.

Antibacterial: The antibacterial filter has nano materials that can trap and destroy organic contaminants such as bacteria, viruses and mold spores.

HEPA: This is the core of the filtration system and this is a true HEPA filter that can remove 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.3 microns. This includes particles such as dust mites, pollen, fungi and mold spores.

Noise level

Since you are likely to be running your air purifier throughout the day and at night, it is important to assess the noise level. While many people are aware that loud noises Trusted Source What Noises Cause Hearing Loss? Noise is a significant source of hearing loss, but you can protect your hearing. An important first step is to understand how noise causes hearing loss. www.cdc.gov Noise is a significant source of hearing loss, but you can protect your hearing. An important first step is to understand how noise causes hearing loss.[/trusted_link] can damage your hearing, an appliance running continually at lower levels can also impact your quality of life.

Fortunately, the HSP001 operates at a noise level of just 18 decibels. This is less than the sound of a ticking watch. On the lowest fan settings, you should barely notice the sound of this air purifier running. However, even on the highest speed settings, the HSP001 will only generate 43 decibels of noise.

This is equivalent to the noise level you would expect in a library and many people find this low level of white noise to be soothing when you’re trying to sleep.

Dimensions and weight

The Hathaway HSP001 has a decent build quality that means that while it feels substantial, it is not unnecessarily bulky. In fact, the HSP001 is actually smaller than the average console air purifier, with a height and width of 20 inches and 13 inches respectively. The overall weight of the unit is approximately 12 pounds, which means that it is easy to move to different areas of your home.

Coverage area

Hathaway claims that the HSP001 has a coverage area of 700 square feet, but this is likely to be only in ideal conditions. In a typical home, you are likely to find it delivers optimum efficiency in approximately half of this maximum.

If you need to cover an area of 350 square feet, you should find that the HSP001 can deliver excellent air purification, which you may struggle to achieve in a larger area.

Indicators

Hathaspace HSP001 Review: Is This a High-Quality Budget Product?
With Hathaspace HSP001 monitor you can always check air condition and adjust the settings accordingly

One of the interesting things about the HSP001 is the indicator display. This is a colored LED system that is a traffic light indicator. The scale for the indicators runs from poor (red) through to excellent (green). This provides you with an immediate indication of your indoor air quality.

CADR rating

The CADR or Clean Air Delivery Rate is a common metric for air purifiers. A CADR rating is a measurement of the number of cubic feet of air the air purifier can effectively remove contaminant particles per minute. The highest possible ratings are 400 to 450 and the higher the score, the more effective the air purifier.

CADR ratings are calculated using a room that measures 1008 cubic feet. The device runs for 25 minutes and after the test, the levels of contaminants are measured against the pre test levels. This creates an objective measurement of how well the purifier can remove different particle sizes.

Unfortunately, the Hathaspace HSP001 has quite a low CADR of 160 to 170. This is the reason why the Hathaspace claims of a 700 square foot coverage capacity is overestimated. Where you to run the unit in an area of this size, based on the CADR of 160, it would not be very efficient. However, if you’re using the unit in a smaller space of 350 square feet or less, you should find the CADR sufficient.

Controls and screen

The HSP001 features a display on the front of the device. This screen shows all the important information about the device including the timer, fan speed, mode, and light. Each of these metrics illuminate differently, making the display clear and easy to read.

The controls for the unit are arranged into two rows. The buttons themselves are intuitive and respond to pressure even when lightly pressed. Each time you press a button, you’ll hear a beep, so you can be aware of what you’re adjusting.

However, you can also use the included remote control to adjust the device settings. The remote control features the same control buttons as on the unit itself. While the remote is plastic and does require two AAA batteries that are not supplied, it does make it more convenient to adjust the settings from the comfort of your chair.

Just be aware that there are some reports that the remote can be a little twitchy and unresponsive if you’re too far from the unit. So, when you use the remote, try to point it directly at the air purifier unit and avoid using it from too far away.

Automatic functions

Hathaspace HSP001 Review: Is This a High-Quality Budget Product?
Hathaspace HSP001 takes control over the air cleaning while you just set the time when it starts its job

The HSP001 features a number of air quality sensors that allow the unit to determine the current air quality inside the room. Unlike many air purifiers, which have sensors on the side or rear of the unit, the HSP001 has sensors just under the front cover. This is excellent sensor placement, as they are at the point where the air intake is the strongest for a more accurate air quality reading.

Depending on the current air quality, you’ll see one of three colors; green, yellow and red. The automatic mode works in concert with this traffic light indicator system. In auto mode, the HSP001 will change the fan speed automatically.

If the unit is showing green, the air quality is currently good and the HSP001 will switch to a low speed. This is automatically changed to a medium-speed setting if the air quality becomes moderate (yellow). Finally, if the air quality is poor (red), the HSP001 will automatically work at the highest speed.

This automatic function is a highly efficient system, as the unit automatically adjusts to the changing indoor air quality conditions. Since the air quality inside our homes is rarely static, you can simply set the air purifier to “auto” and the device will make changes as and when necessary without you needing to intervene.

Warranty

The standard warranty offered by Hathaspace for the HSP001 is two years if you register your purchase on the Hathaspace website. However, it is possible to extend your warranty for up to five years via the Filter Club.

As the name suggests, the Filter Club is a subscription service for replacement filters that are compatible with your new HSP001. You’ll receive a filter delivery automatically every four months at a discounted rate. You can expect to save approximately 10% on the replacement filters and you’ll enjoy free shipping. There is no commitment to maintain membership of the filter club, as you can cancel or customize your subscription at any time. However, it does offer the benefit of extending the manufacturer’s warranty on your new HSP001.

It is also possible to join the Filter Club with your existing Hathaspace device, by just answering a few questions about your current device. However, this is an ongoing service that would have no impact on your warranty.

Price tag

Outside of Asia, Hathaspace is not a particularly well-known brand. This company is based in China and developed products to cope with the dangerous air quality index levels that are common in its various urban areas. However, Hathaspace has taken this technology and developed products that are suitable for other areas of the world.

Hathaway has two main air purifier products and many people may feel reluctant to deal with a minor brand, despite its growing popularity in the US market. This is reflected in the price tag of the product. Hathaway appreciates that it cannot trade on a large, well-known brand name to attach a hefty price tag, so the HSP001 is firmly in the lower end of the price band for the market.

Despite the fairly modest price tag, the HSP001 does have all the major bases that you would expect in an air purifier covered. Considering that it has a multi stage filtration system, it does compare quite favorably to other models at this price point. So, unless you prefer dealing with a more established US brand, you are likely to appreciate the value offered by the HSP001.

PROS

CONS

  • Multi filtration system with numerous levels of physical filters together with an ionizer for complete air purification.
  • Can eliminate 99.97% of airborne particles including allergens such as pollen and mold spores.
  • Air quality sensors that rate the IAQ as poor, moderate and good. When combined with the auto mode, the HSP001 will automatically adjust the fan speeds for optimum performance according to the current air quality conditions.
  • Control via the unit display or remote control.
  • Quiet performance with 43 decibels at the highest speed settings.
  • No app or smart speaker connectivity.
  • The unit does not have a filter reset indicator.
  • Although you can sign up for the Filter Club, which provides a discount, the unit has slightly higher than average maintenance costs.

Conclusion

There are numerous air purifiers on the market, and Hathaspace is not a brand that is particularly well known outside of Asia. While this may make some consumers hesitant about trusting a lesser-known brand, the compensation for this is that the price point for the Hathaspace models is very reasonable.

Despite being at the lower end of the air purifier price scale, the HSP001 is packed with features. It may lack a compatible app or smart speaker compatibility, but it does have multi filter technology, which includes physical filter layers with a genuine HEPA filter at its core.

There is also an innovative sensor system linked to a traffic light display. When combined with the auto mode, the HSP001 will automatically adjust the fan speeds to suit the current indoor air quality conditions.

While there are both positives and negatives, hopefully, this Hathaspace HSP001 review has provided the details you need to make an informed choice about whether this is the right air filtration unit for your home.
